Today, you will take a trip to Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace, which are located in the same compound. You will then see Wat Pho, which is home to more than one thousand Buddha images, as well as the breath-taking perfection of the Reclining Buddha. After exploring the temples, it will be an ideal time to treat yourself to a massage in Wat Pho. The first experience of a traditional Thai massage might be a little distressing for some, but usually people recognize that they feel extraordinarily relaxed after the massage. You will then continue your journey into the marvelous world of contrasts in Bangkok – the sleepless, hectic city with skyscrapers and modern shopping malls that blend with the temples, islands of peace drenched in spirituality. After a short walk you will find the largest monastic order and Vipasana meditation center. Wat Mahathat, which houses the oldest Buddhist University is one of the most important places of Buddhist studies in Bangkok. Here you will experience an introduction to meditation techniques performed in three positions (sitting, standing and walking) and also have a chance to talk to some monks. You will return to your hotel in the afternoon.
You will meet your driver in the hotel lobby to travel to Bangkok Airport for a flight to Chiang Mai. Upon arrival you will meet your driver at Chiang Mai Airport and travel by air-conditioned vehicle to your hotel. In the afternoon, you will take a ride up the centuries old Doi Suthep, one of the highest hills and within easy reach of Chiang Mai. Doi Suthep is also one of the city’s most spiritually noteworthy temples. Experience a unique private blessing and witness the monks’ chanting: an awe-inspiring and exotic experience that offers plentiful food for thought. Feeling suspended in a balance between earth and sky, admire the setting sun as the sky will burst into color.
In the morning you will go to a teahouse run by an expat who is a real tea aficionado. While tea is mainly associated with China, many people don’t know that Southeast-Asia actually also has very extensive tea history. Your host will tell you all about how tea has been used for centuries in the region, not only for drinking but also for eating. You will get the opportunity to taste some extraordinary teas including some miang, a local fermented tea product that is slowly making its way on the list of “superfoods”. After tea tasting it will be time to try out some new flavors with a lunch based on Northern Thai food and tea-based dishes. Return to Chiang Mai in the afternoon and indulge your senses in a genuine old-style Thai Massage. This one will not only relieve your muscle tension but will also help female ex-prisoners reintegrate into professional society. It’s a good cause activity which make a virtue of necessity. The rest of the day will be free at leisure.
Today you will spend time with a local family whose Lanna traditions go back 5 generations. Lanna is the name of the former Northern Thai kingdom and your hosts still incorporate ancient traditions in their daily life. While you will spend time with the family they will explain about the different aspects of their everyday life. After exploring the traditional houses and the vast gardens you will cook up a delicious meal over a charcoal fire. In the evening you will have the opportunity to enjoy some Northern Thai dishes accompanied by traditional dances and music. While many believe this northern Thai dinner with music and dance was invented for tourists, the Kantoke dinner dates back many centuries. Nowadays Kantoke dinners are still organized for big parties and special events and there are a couple of places in Chiang Mai that put on daily shows to promote the history and culture of the ancient northern kingdom of Lanna. You will be comfortably sitting on cushions on the floor to enjoy delicious food served in a traditional Thai Lanna style while watching a spectacular performance of traditional northern Thai dances.
In the morning you will travel to Chiang Mai Airport for a flight to Phuket. Upon arrival, you will meet your driver at Phuket airport and travel to your hotel. Exquisite white-sandy beaches, clear emerald sea water and bright sunlight are all synonymous with Phuket, an international magnet for beach lovers all over the world. Present-day Phuket has been shaped by its diverse ethnic groups, cultures, architectural influences, and traditional fine cuisines. The island also has more to offer visitors than its natural heritage of sea, sand, sky, beach, forests and world renowned diving sites. The old town of Phuket is definitely another charming place well worthy of a visit.
For the next days, you will be free to indulge in your favorite activities. Spend time at the hotel spa (massages not included), just chill out at the white beach and float in the crystal waters or go for a bit more adventurous activities.
You will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the pier to board a boat to Koh Yao Noi. As soon as you set foot on this island you will feel the stark contrast between bustling Phuket and this quiet island. After choosing your bicycle, you will begin cycling along the rural side of the island (on and off-road) past rice paddies, local villages and rubber plantations. Just before lunch you will board a local long-tail boat that will take you to a remote beach, from here a short walk will bring you to the islands’ biggest tree. Continue your journey by boat to Koh Kudu, a small and uninhabited island where you will have a picnic lunch on a deserted beach. After spending some time swimming and relaxing in these beautiful surroundings it will be time to return to Koh Yao Noi for some more cycling, this time with some beautiful views of Phang Nga bay in the distance.
